| What can be achieved? |
Breast Enhancement surgery is very effective at increasing breast size.
Implants are a very effective means of achieving the size and shape of breast that you want. Modern implants and surgical techniques mean that you can consider different shapes as well as sizes.
A breast implant can also be positioned beneath the muscle.
The breast implant is shown in blue, placed at the base of the breast.
Implants are placed either under the breast tissue or behind the muscle upon which the breast lies. They are made of a shaped silicone outer capsule which is filled with a fluid, usually silicone gel. Implants come in two basic shapes. 'Round' implants are the most commonly used and give a uniform projection throughout the breast. 'Anatomical' or 'tear drop' shaped implants give less fullness in the upper pole and may be preferred by some women for their more natural profile.
If the operation does not achieve the shape that you want, the implants can be removed and/or replaced. This may entail additional expense. Most implants have a life expectancy of 10 years, though often they can last much longer without any problems. Implants do not need to be removed or replaced unless they are causing a problem (see complications).
Breast implants do not usually affect the woman's ability to breast-feed.
